This year's St Patrick's Day celebrations might be restricted but that won't stop us from drinking and supporting Irish breweries! We'll be swapping our pint of the Black stuff for something a little more crafty! After all, if the last year has taught us anything, it's the importance of shopping close to home and supporting our local craft brewers — there is certainly plenty to choose from. Below are a few Irish craft beers that showcase some of the fantastic craft beer delights this small island has to offer. Slainte!

1. Whiplash – Ocean Wide

A brown ale special release from Whiplash which pays tribute to Dingle resident Fungie the bottlenose dolphin who was last seen swimming off the coast of Kerry back on Saturday, October 13. In his memory, Whiplash has brewed a beer they can only assume would impress the famous dolphin – a maple syrup infused Brown Ale. Made using a traditional base of floor malted Maris Otter for an extra biscuity and nutty flavour, some old school Brown Malt, a few Oats, Belgian Aromatic, a light touch of Chocolate Malt and a very, very heavy hand of Maple Syrup.

ABV 6.8% | €5.10

2. Tom Crean Scurvy Dog IPA

A very sessionable, easy-drinking beer which has been known to convert wine drinkers! Crisp and refreshing with citrus fruit and floral notes.

ABV 4.2% | €3.40

3. DOT Brew Hibernation Sensation

Our first collaboration with DOT Brew which is an oh so delicious Imperial Stout of which 80% has been aged in ex-15 Year Old Single Malt ex-PX Sherry cask for 10 months and then 20% has been aged in an Irish blended whiskey ex-dark rum cask for 6 months. At a hefty 9.7% this brew is bursting full of flavour — rich and complex with dried fruits, caramel, nutty notes, and a wisp of dark chocolate.

ABV 9.7% | €5.30

4. Black Donkey Sergeant Jimmy

A Limited Release not to miss! Black Donkey's Sergeant Jimmy is a barrel-aged Saison which spent a few weeks in Irish whiskey barrels before being bottled. This barrel ageing process ramps up all you should find in a Saison! Notes of oak, banana, saison spice, and a gentle alcohol warmth.

ABV 8% | €4.70

5. Western Herd Blue Jumper

Named after one of our Irish favourites, Father Ted! The Western Herd Blue Jumper is a classic, West Coast-style IPA which has been hopped with Centennial, Idaho 7 and Citra. Lots of sweet candied orange and peach notes with a slight bitterness at the back.

ABV 6.2% | €4.30

6. Lineman Idle Red IPA

A great balance of malt and hops in this Red IPA, very drinkable and crisp on the palate, with light caramel notes and just a little bitterness.

ABV 6.6% | €3.90

7. Kinnegar Thumper

Winner at the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland award! Kinnegar Thumper is a double IPA with plenty of hoppy aromas driving forward melon and tropical fruit flavours. At 7.8% this is strong on alcohol as well as hops!

ABV 7.8% | €3.80

8. White Hag Shamrock Shake

A continuation of the White Hag Spree Series and this brew has been created just in time for Paddy's Day! A mint ice-cream ale which is a beertiful take on the golden arches minty green milkshakes from back in the day! Well worth a try!

ABV 5.5% | €2.50

9. Boundary Brewing Export Stout

It wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without a good stout! At a hefty 7%, this stout is full bodied and aromatic with delicious notes of caramel, chocolate, Christmas cake and coffee. Smooth, complex and an absolute treat.

ABV 7% | €3.59
