Ah Oktoberfest, a festival all about quality beer, how could we not love it!

The festival originated on October 12, 1810, as a celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Fun fact: Did you know Oktoberfest originally ended with a horse race? Probably best we don’t include that with the number of steins drank by tourists and locals alike during those dates…

Naturally, after such an epic celebration, the people decided they wanted more and over time the demand for breweries to set up huge beer tents grew and grew into what the festival is today.

What Beer Do You Drink At Oktoberfest?

While you can find plenty of different beverages, we all know beer is the big one! But what kind of beer exactly? Well, the short answer is Marzen, from the lager family. Marzen Beer, otherwise known as March Beer, would originally have been served at a higher ABV but today they opt for something a little lighter. These brews are similar in style and flavour to lagers, except they introduce toasted bread and biscuity flavours into the mix. They can also pour more amber to brown in colour than a typical golden lager and can pack a heavier ABV than the lighter lagers you might be used to!

Right, the quick history lesson done and dusted. Now, on to the fun part: the beers of course! So, dust off your favourite stein, squeeze into your best pair of lederhosen, get the bratwurst and pretzels ready and, most importantly, crack open some of these beauts! Prost!
